Black Media Foundation

The Black Media Foundation was co-founded in 1993 by Natalie Byfield and Clarence Sheppard to among other things, address the under-representation of minorities in the media.

BMF's vision is to create socially conscious media and media professionals. We view increasing the numbers of journalists of color as an important part of creating socially conscious media.

A socially conscious media professional is someone who pursues storytelling about people, places, and issues typically ignored by the mainstream. A socially conscious media professional is also aware of the history of the communities he/she tells stories about and someone who understands the power the media has to shape lives

FAIR - Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting

FAIR, the national media watch group, has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986. We work to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press and by scrutinizing media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints. As an anti-censorship organization, we expose neglected news stories and defend working journalists when they are muzzled. As a progressive group, FAIR believes that structural reform is ultimately needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, establish independent public broadcasting and promote strong non-profit sources of information.

La Lutta New Media Collective (NMC), a non-profit, community-based organization, is a diverse group of people united to promote a greater level of social awareness through new media. Serving two critical roles, La Lutta is a vital resource for community empowerment. First, La Lutta offers new media technical assistance to non-profit, community and grassroots groups unable to incorporate appropriate technological strategies into their daily operations. Secondly, La Lutta is a production house for these groups as well as students, artists, and individuals who lack the proper forum for expression, creativity, and information sharing.
